About the work

The two Biennial drawings (a diptych and triptych) are recipes. They are hovering between proposals for artworks, recipes for cooking and eating, and suggestions for actions and making. They will feature in the forthcoming Phaidon book The Artist’s Kitchen, for which these were the original templates.

About the artist:

Born 1976 Athens, Athanasios Argianas lives and works in London and Athens.

Argianas’ work explores the contingency of sounds and forms and the possibility of new or different understanding arising through the translation between aural and material experiences. He oscillates between employing standardized systems for converting sound to object in some works, and allowing for more intuitive translation in others.

His works are held in public and private collections including The Length Of A Strand Of Your Hair, Of The Width Of Your Arms, Unfolded at EMST, the National Museum Of Contemporary Art, Athens; and Song Machine 19 at Frédéric de Goldschmidt, Brussels.

Selected exhibitions include Hollowed Water, Camden Art Centre, London (2020); Slow Painting, Hayward Touring to various UK venues (2020); Antidoron, Documenta 14, Fridericianum, Kassel, and touring (2017); Line, Lisson Gallery, London (2016); The Promise Of Total Automation, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2016); Art of Its Own Making, The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, St Louis (2014); PERFORMA 13, New York (2013); The Imminence of Poetics, The 30th Biennale of Sao Paulo (2012); Art of Its Own Making, Art Now Live, Tate Britain, London (2011); The Length Of Your Arms Unfolded, Barbican Art Gallery, London (2011); The Length Of A Strand Of Your Hair, Of The Width Of Your Arms, Unfolded, EMST National Museum Of Contemporary Art, Athens (2010); and We All Turn This Way, The Serpentine Pavilion, London (2008).
