About the work

Roughly ninety percent of what I create is work on paper. They exist in their own right and are not preparations for Paintings. The source material for these works is emotive and can emerge from anywhere at anytime. It’s an activity that I allow to flow through me with the mediums I choose to employ such as pencil, watercolour, ink and collage. Like many artists I study Art History closely and I find a special resonance with work on paper, across cultures and centuries. It’s a medium that always feels slightly closer to inspiration and, in that respect, maybe the spark of the artist shines a bit brighter? In my own practice I experiment continually with work on paper for its immediacy and to break habits, finding new kinds of expression drawn from the world around me and the subconscious?

Career Highlights

Rolph’s works feature in major collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Tate Gallery (London), National Gallery of Iceland, HighLanes Municipal art gallery (Drogheda) and Mark Rothko Arts Centre (Latvia).

Forthcoming solo shows in 2024 are planned for New York and Mallorca.

Auction close and bidder extension

The auction closes at 9pm (BST) Monday 3rd July, however, if a bid is placed in the last two minutes, the auction end time will extend on that lot for an additional two minutes, or until all bidding has ceased. This is called Popcorn Bidding or Bidder Extension and gives all bidders an equal chance of winning.

Bid Increments

£50 increments for bids of £300 – £1,000

£100 increments for bids of £1,000 – £2,000

£250 increments for bids of £2,000 – £5,000

£500 increments for bids of £5,000 plus

Maximum bids

You are more likely to be the winning bidder if at the outset you place a maximum bid i.e. the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the work. Your maximum bid is not visible to other bidders. If another bidder exceeds your maximum bid you will receive an automatic notification. If you have placed a maximum bid the auction site will automatically place bids on your behalf, but only as much is necessary to make sure that you remain the highest bidder, until it reaches your maximum bid. These automatic bids are placed in increments, as shown above.
