About the work
In this series of paintings on paper, Ruscha explores geometric abstraction and interactions of colour to create a psychedelic experience for the viewer. Like some of the pioneers of Op Art, Ruscha is interested in dissecting and dismembering the visual experience. An experimentalist in both fine art and music, Ruscha likens his use of airbrush on these works to playing the ancient Theremin synthesizer, an instrument controlled without physical contact by the musician. Inspired by Abstraction, Dadaism, album art, and poster art, Ruscha’s work challenges the traditional definition of what art can be and invites viewers to focus on enjoying the visual stimulation, free of self-judgement.

Born 1968 Los Angeles, Eddie Ruscha lives and works in Los Angeles. Graduated from California Institute of the Arts (1991).
My practice of art making is always practice. Only it never comes out perfect. Perfection is boring. Perfection is finite. Things shift through time like sliding mud. All art is on the side of a hill and reacts differently when it rains. Some slide down faster and fall into an unknown place. Some explorers dig around and find these buried artifacts and place them back on the hill and see if they stick this time around. There is no telling how the people of the future will perceive an idea. Only art can do that.
His work is held in private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
