About the work

I have been always looking at the image and its secret connotations of different life forms, such as the animal planet. This is somehow connected to a cityscape which is cultivated from the whomp of a whale.

About the artist:

Born 1956 Ankara, Inci Eviner lives and works in Istanbul. Graduated from Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (1980), and Mimar Sinan University (1987).

Ranging from drawings and video to performative and collaborative practices, Inci Eviner’s large body of work comprises multi-layered pieces that originate from drawings. Especially in her works where power and representation politics on the female body are addressed, Eviner examines how the subjectivity is formed. On the other hand, the complex relationships that the artist establishes between video technologies and traditional painting suggest a different form of perception.

Drawing is central to Eviner’s works; she defines the point of departure of her practice as “expressions made through lines on paper”. She builds and constantly enriches her artistic approach, strolling through a boundless visual language ranging from art historical allegories, iconographies, illustrations, and mythologies to contemporary ideograms and pictograms.

Her works are held in public and private collections including the Deutsche Bank Collection; Center Pompidou, Paris; Istanbul Modern; Guggenheim, New York; and TBA21, Vienna.

Selected solo exhibitions include We, Elsewhere, Pavilion of Turkey, 58th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2019); Beneath the Horizon, Galeri Nev, Istanbul (2017); Looping on Thin Ice, Peal Lam Galleries, Shanghai (2016); Runaway Girls, The Drawing Center, New York (2015); Broken Manifestos, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2011); and Harem, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2009). Selected group exhibitions include Inspired by the East, British Museum, London (2019-20); Dystopia: Marking the 200th Anniversary of Karl Marx’s Birth, Municipal Museum of Jena (2018); Fault Lines, Gwangju Biennale 2018 (2018); Hand Drawn, Action Packed, Hayward Gallery/Southbank Centre touring exhibition (2018-19); Punk Orientalism, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Albert St. Regina (2018-19); Liverpool Biennial (2018); Under Pressure- On Forms of Authority and Decision- Making Power, MuseumsQuartier Wien, Vienna (2018); Gwangju Biennial (2018); Dystopia: Marking the 200th Anniversary of Karl Marx’s Birth, Municipal Museum of Jena (2018); and 13th Istanbul Biennial (2013).
