About the work

Sleep, I sing – is a phrase from Virginia Woolf’s novel The Waves. I have made several works relating to this novel, a beautiful stream of consciousness with its flow of sensory impressions, unformed emotions and memories. It was her last published book before her suicide in 1941.
The work is from a Genoa sail cloth, many of the markings made from the sea, drops of tea and a splash of hand dyed burnt saffron silk. These materials convey the aesthetic language of the life and work of Virginia.
