As one of the many thousands of John Smiths around the world I am well aware of the importance of a name.
About the artist:
Born 1952 Walthamstow, John Smith lives and works in London. Graduated from Communication Design, North-East London Polytechnic (1974); and MA Film, Royal College of Art (1977).
Smith works in a variety of media but is best known for his influential film and video works, which have been shown in galleries, cinemas and on television around the world for more than four decades and awarded major prizes at many international film festivals. Renowned for its formal ingenuity, subversive wit and oblique storytelling, his work blurs the boundaries between documentary, fiction, representation and abstraction, playfully exploring and exposing the language of cinema. Smith is Emeritus Professor of Fine Art at University of East London.
