About the work

As one of the many thousands of John Smiths around the world I am well aware of the importance of a name.

About the artist:

Born 1952 Walthamstow, John Smith lives and works in London. Graduated from Communication Design, North-East London Polytechnic (1974); and MA Film, Royal College of Art (1977).

Smith works in a variety of media but is best known for his influential film and video works, which have been shown in galleries, cinemas and on television around the world for more than four decades and awarded major prizes at many international film festivals. Renowned for its formal ingenuity, subversive wit and oblique storytelling, his work blurs the boundaries between documentary, fiction, representation and abstraction, playfully exploring and exposing the language of cinema. Smith is Emeritus Professor of Fine Art at University of East London.

Selected solo exhibitions include Kunstmuseum Magdeburg (2021); Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig (2015); Centre d’Art Contemporain de Noisy-le-Sec, Paris (2014); Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover (2012); Turner Contemporary, Margate (2012); Weserburg Museum for Modern Art, Bremen (2012); Uppsala Art Museum, Sweden (2011); Royal College of Art Galleries, London (2010); and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2006). Selected group exhibitions include Le Cours des Choses, CAPC Musee d’Art Contemporain de Bordeaux (2020); Double Takes: Historic and Contemporary Film and Video, Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland (2019); Between Film and Photography, FOMU Museum, Antwerp (2017); After the Fact: Propaganda in the 21st Century, Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich (2017); Invocable Reality, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2014); The Reluctant Narrator, Berardo Museum, Lisbon (2014); Constellations, Tate Liverpool (2013-14); Image Counter Image, Haus der Kunst, Munich (2012); Has The Film Already Started?, Tate Britain, London (2011); Berlin Biennial (2010); The Talent Show, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and MoMA PS1, New York (2010); Venice Biennale (2007); A Century of Artists’ Film in Britain, Tate Britain, London (2004); Live in Your Head: Concept and Experiment in Britain 1965-75, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2000); and The British Art Show, touring exhibition (1984).
