About the work
Underskin V was created during the first lockdown in 2020. Houlding’s drawings allude to the substance in which we think, and into and out of which we bring to bear our understanding of the world. They try to pin down a representation of thought in a form of abstracted portraits, architectures and environments.
About the artist:
Born 1972 Essex, Jonathan Houlding lives and works in London. Graduated from BA (Hons) Wimbledon School of Art (1994); MA (Distinction) Kingston University (1998); and MA Royal College of Art (2005).
Houlding is a multi-disciplinary Artist and Designer. Alongside his practice as an artist, he is a Production Designer for feature films and an award-winning Art Director who has worked for many of the world’s leading Directors including Sir Ridley Scott, Stephen Spielberg and Neil Jordan.
His work is held in public and private collections including the V&A; Sammlung Lenikus; British Council (Hong Kong); and The Fundacio Pilar, Joan Miro.
Selected solo exhibitions include All that is left, Sammlung Lenikus, Vienna (2014); Greymatter (with Sean Borodale), Fundacio Pilar Joan Miro a Mallorca, Mallorca (2010); and Greymatter (with Sean Borodale), Estampa, Madrid (2009).
Awards include the Parallel Prize and the Thames and Hudson Award.
