About the work
Oh Through What is one of a series of paintings made on an already existing page of text. I’ve encircled every connecting word (conjunctions, determiners, prepositions etc.) and painted over the surroundings with curves, waves, dips and peaks. Even though this is a kind of silencing, I think another sound and rhythm comes into being.
About the artist:
Born 1965 Hertfordshire, Louise Hopkins lives and works in Glasgow. Graduated from University of Northumbria (1988), and Glasgow School of Art (1994).
Hopkins makes paintings and drawings directly onto surfaces that already contain information; world maps, patterned furnishing fabric, comics, catalogue pages, magazine pages, photographs, folded or crumpled paper and sheet music. Recently she has been developing large-scale abstract geometric works for urban and rural locations, taking the principles by which she always worked and applying them on a whole new scale.
Her works are held in public and private collections including Museum of Modern Art, New York; Arts Council England, London; City Arts Centre, Edinburgh; Jumex Collection, Mexico; and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
