About the work

One of an ongoing series, collectively titled Notes to Self, in which sheets of paper containing random notes and reminders are later worked over. The content or formal qualities of the notes prompt a response in the form of a new drawing.

About the artist:

Born 1972 Scotland, Paul McDevitt lives and works in Berlin. Graduated from BA Visual Arts, Lancaster University (1992-1995); and MA Painting, Chelsea College of Art (1999-2000).

McDevitt works in a variety of different media but keeps returning to drawing and print. His ongoing series of drawings Notes to Self orientate as an A4 pad of paper upon which everyday notes and reminders are kept. These latter form the basis for new drawings, which respond to formal or written elements of the original notes. They are used in a very pragmatic manner, as a way of coming unstuck during the lull between bigger projects, to think through a problem by doing.

McDevitt publishes books and records as Infinite Greyscale (with Cornelius Quabeck), with recent releases include Andreas Eriksson – Weavings hardback book (2020), and Alasdair Roberts – Fretted and Indebted vinyl record (2020). He also runs the project space Farbvision with recent solo exhibitions including artists Mathew Weir, Sofia Hultén, Caroline Kryzecki (2020); and Ingrid Wiener, Aleana Egan, Günter Förg (2019).

His works are held in public and private collections including V&A, London; British Museum, London; Arts Council of England; and CCA Andratx, Mallorca.

Selected solo exhibitions include Modern Furnishings, Martin Asbæk Gallery, Copenhagen (2021); 40 Sipgate, Düsseldorf (2018); SMAC, Berlin (2017); Dolph Projects, London (2017); House of St Barnabas, London (2016); Grand Canyon, Stephen Friedman Gallery, London (2015); and Hunker Down, Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Art (2015). Selected group exhibitions include Du coq à l’âne, Art Contemporain, le Bel Ordinaire, Pau (2019); Costermongering, Belmacz, London (2016); Recordings, Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Hamburg (2015); Body & Void: Echoes of Moore in Contemporary Art, The Henry Moore Foundation, Perry Green (2014); Drawing Biennial 2013, Drawing Room, London (2013); and Zeichen und Wunder, Kunsthaus Nürnberg, Nuremberg (2012).
