About the work

In exploring automatic drawing, I’ve been trying to apply similar free flowing qualities to figurative work. I have also been exploring the potential within the figure as parts of it manifest through this automatic process.

About the artist:

Born 1991 Lagos, Richard Ayodeji Ikhide lives and works in London. Graduated from Foundation Diploma, Central Saint Martins, London (2011); BA, Central Saint Martins, London (2014); and Postgraduate Diploma, Royal Drawing School, London (2017).

Ikhide creates paintings and drawings inspired by his Nigerian heritage as well as his interest in other civilizations and mythologies. The works have a figurative core, but they are completed with colorful abstract gestures and patterns. According to Ikhide, “Many cultural histories converge in my work. During the course of my life, I have absorbed a lot of information, and when I make work, I intuitively respond to it and my life experiences. In doing so, I aim to bring together past, present and future as well as multiple geographies and cultures.”

Selected solo exhibitions include Cosmic Memory, Steve Turner, Los Angeles (2021); Future Past, V.O Curations, London (2021); and Osmosis, Zabludowicz Collection, London (2019). Selected group exhibitions include No Horizon, No Edge to Liquid, Zabludowicz Collection, London (2020); Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2018, John Moores University, Liverpool and South London Gallery, London (2018); Best of Drawing Year 2018, Christies, London (2017); and Obscurity, Somewhereto, London (2015).

Residencies include V.O Curations Residency, London (2021). Awards include Clothworkers’ Award 1st Prize, The Clothworkers’ Company and Central Saint Martins, London (2018).

The auction closes at 9pm, Mon 5th July. However, if a bid is placed in the last two minutes, the auction end time will extend on that lot for an additional two minutes, or until all bidding has ceased. This is called Popcorn Bidding or Bidder Extension and gives all bidders an equal chance of winning.

£50 increments for bids of £300 – £1,000

£100 increments for bids of £1,000 – £2,000

£250 increments for bids of £2,000 – £5,000

£500 increments for bids of £5,000 plus

Maximum bids

You are more likely to be the winning bidder if at the outset you place a maximum bid i.e. the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the work. Your maximum bid is not visible to other bidders. If another bidder exceeds your maximum bid you will receive an automatic notification. If you have placed a maximum bid the auction site will automatically place bids on your behalf, but only as much is necessary to make sure that you remain the highest bidder, until it reaches your maximum bid. These automatic bids are placed in increments, as shown above.
