About the work

One of a series of pencil and watercolour studies drawn during my time spent on Fogo Island in Newfoundland in 2018 and 2019, exploring a convergence of textile traditions, esoterica, and the sea.

About the artist:

Born 1974 London, Shezad Dawood lives and works in London. Graduated from BA Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design (1994-1997); MA Royal College of Art (1998-2000); MPhil Fine Art (Photography) Royal College of Art (2000-2003); and PhD (Fine Art) Leeds Metropolitan University (2004-2008).

Dawood works across the disciplines of painting, film, neon, sculpture, performance, virtual reality and other digital media to ask key questions of narrative, history and embodiment. Using the editing process as a method to explore both meanings and forms, his practice often involves collaboration and knowledge exchange, mapping across multiple audiences and communities. Through a fascination with the esoteric, otherness, the environment and architectures both material and virtual, Dawood interweaves stories, realities and symbolism to create richly layered artworks.

His work is held in public and private collections including Tate; UBS; LACMA; National Gallery of Canada; US Government Art Collection; The British Museum; Sharjah Art Foundation; Kiran Nadar; and Rubin Museum of Art.
