About the work
“It’s like having marmalade on your fingers or jam under your feet,
You get a bit stuck in a way,
It’s just about being stuck.”
About the artist:
Born 1963 in Oslo, Vanessa Baird lives and works in Oslo. Graduated from SHKS, Oslo (1985); MA, Royal College of Art, London (1987); and Statens Kunstakademi, Oslo (1991).
Baird’s work is story telling of a kind that is both potently provocative and emphatically individual. Her charged creations, made in pastel and watercolour, range from room-size murals to intimate self-portraits and draw on a wide range of references from her own lived experiences, as well as from Scandinavian folklore and literature.
Baird’s works are held in public and private collections including The Nordic Watercolour Museum, Skärhamn; National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo; Norsk kulturråd, Oslo; Bergen Billedgalleri; Nordea, Oslo; and Hydro, Oslo.
Selected solo exhibitions include If ever there were an end to a story that had no beginning, Drawing Room, London (2021); You are something else, KODE- Contemporary Art Museum, Bergen (2019); I’ve got ants in my pants, OSL Contemporary, Oslo (2018); You are something else, Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2017); Lorck Schive Art Award, Trondheim Kunstmuseum (2015); OSL Contemporary, Oslo (2014); Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2014); and Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Gothenburg (2014).
