About the work

This drawing is a study for a painting.

About the artist:

Born 1978 USSR, Yelena Popova lives and works in Nottingham. Graduated from Moscow Art Theatre School (MHAT); and MA Painting at the Royal College of Art (2011).

Popova is an artist who works across a wide range of media, including painting, video, and installation. Reflecting her upbringing in the Urals, she is influenced by the tenets of Russian Constructivism, while often seeking to discuss the constant development of industrialism and the landscape of contemporary Capitalism. There is an important stress placed upon the theme of balance within her work, whether this is political, aesthetic or metaphysical.

Her works are held in public and private collections including the Arts Council Collection, Government Art Collection, RCA Collection, Nottingham Castle Collection, Saatchi Collection, Zabludowicz Collection, and LWL Museum, Münster.

Selected solo exhibitions include The Scholar Stones Project, Holden Gallery, Manchester (2020); Townlets, The Art House, Wakefield (2018); Her Name is Prometheus, Letrangere, London (2018); Elements, Girton College, University of Cambridge (2017); After Image, Nottingham Contemporary (2016); and Portrait Gallery Withdrawn, Eastside projects, Birmingham (2014). Selected group exhibitions include Slow Painting, curated by Martin Herbert, Hayward Gallery touring exhibition (2019); Perpetual Uncertainty, curated by Ele Carpenter, Malmö Konst Museum (2018); and Future Light, curated by Maria Lind, Vienna Biennale (2015).
